Manchester United transfer news and rumours: Summer transfer window 2022

Wrapping up the Man Utd transfer news, rumours and gossip in the 2022 summer window.

Man Utd sign Martinez from Ajax in £56.7m deal

Manchester United have confirmed the £56.7m signing

of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez on a five-year contract.

United have paid a guaranteed €57.37m (£48.3m) for the Argentina international, with an additional €10m (£8.4m) in add-ons agreed between the two clubs. The move sees Martinez link up again with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, who signed him for the club in 2019, at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract in Manchester, with the option of a further 12 months, which would take him beyond his 30th birthday.

Ronaldo holds Ten Hag talks | Atletico and Bayern rule out move
Cristiano Ronaldo held talks over his Manchester United future with boss Erik ten Hag on Tuesday, as Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich both ruled out a move for the forward.

The 37-year-old arrived at United’s Carrington training ground with his agent Jorge Mendes on Tuesday morning for talks.

Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was also seen arriving but it is understood he was there for a regular board meeting with chief executive Richard Arnold.

The Portugal captain has told United he wants to leave this summer amid concerns he will be unable to compete for the biggest trophies at the club.

But United’s stance regarding Ronaldo’s future has remained unchanged: United are willing to listen to offers for Ronaldo this summer, Sky Sports News understands, but the club’s public stance remains that he is not for sale.

Ten Hag: Ronaldo in my plans and not for sale
Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is in his Manchester United plans for the season ahead.

The United boss said: “We are planning with Ronaldo for this season – that’s it. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Asked if Ronaldo wants to leave, Ten Hag replied: “He hasn’t told me this. I have read, but as I say, Cristiano is not for sale, he’s in our plans and we want to get success together.

“I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation him and had a real good talk.”

Ten Hag on De Jong: Starting tour with all players would’ve been best

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admits he would have preferred to have gone into pre-season with a fully equipped squad that would have ideally included Frenkie de Jong.

‘De Jong looks set to stay at Barcelona’
Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero on Sky Sports News:

“Man Utd want the player and there was an agreement with FC Barcelona, but the main problem for Manchester United is the player, who likes the tranquillity, obviously he knows Man Utd is a huge club, Ten Hag is an amazing coach, especially for him, but he wants to stay in Spain, in La Liga, at Barcelona, which was his dream.

“The club asked de Jong to leave as they need the money, maybe de Jong has to accept the situation, but he and his agent have explained to Xavi Hernandez and Joan Laporta that ‘I want to stay at the club.’

“And as we have been saying with Kounde and Lewandowski, the player normally gets what he wants and if he wants to stay, then he will stay, sorry for Man Utd fans!”

Man Utd comfortable in De Jong pursuit
Manchester United still believe a deal can be done for the Frenkie de Jong. A broad agreement is on the table worth £72m.

United will have their own deadline on the deal as they have other targets if the deal proves too difficult to complete.

For now, United are continuing to pursue the Dutch international. The feeling is all the obstacles are still on the Barcelona end with the issue of deferred wages unresolved.

It is thought De Jong is owed £17m after taking a pay cut during the pandemic.

Man Utd sign midfielder Eriksen on free
Manchester United have completed the signing of Christian Eriksen on a three-year deal following a rigorous medical.

The 30-year-old has strengthened Erik ten Hag’s midfield options at Old Trafford after opting against remaining at Brentford, where he enjoyed an impressive stint on loan last season.

Denmark international Eriksen will not join United’s pre-season tour of Australia due to the long flight involved from the UK.

Ten Hag: United searching for midfielders and forwards
Erik ten Hag confirmed Manchester United were still looking to do business in the transfer market with midfielders and forwards top of the list.

Sky Sports News was told last week Man United and Barcelona have a “broad agreement” on a fee – believed to be €65m (£56m) plus performance-related add-ons – for Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag was not prepared to speak about specific targets but said: “Definitely we are searching for players in the midfield, and also in offence we are still looking for players.

“I never talk about players who are not under contract at Man United, players at different clubs. I cannot tell you anything about this issue.

“We want to have the right players. We have a really good squad, we’re working on developing our way of play and if the opportunity is there, we will strike.”

Tielemans to discuss Leicester future
Youri Tielemans will sit down to discuss his Leicester City future with manager Brendan Rodgers this week.

He currently has one year left on his existing contract and has consistently refused offers of a new deal.

Arsenal have been long-time admirers of the midfielder but the £34m signing of Fabio Vieira, who plays in a similar role to Tielemans, means they are unlikely to pursue a deal with Leicester right now.

Manchester United and Newcastle are also reportedly interested in Tielemans, though they have yet to make any concrete offers.

Mejbri set to be loaned out to the Championship
Man Utd’s Tunisia international Hannibal Mejbri looks set to join a Championship club on loan, with Birmingham, West Brom, Millwall and Middlesbrough all interested in signing the youngster.

The 19-year-old, who made two Premier League appearances last season, featured under Erik ten Hag for the first time against Crystal Palace on United’s pre-season tour of Australia on Tuesday.

However, there has been interest from abroad, with Braga and two clubs in Spain also keen on the midfielder.

A decision on where he’ll be playing this coming season is expected early next week.

Sky Sports News understands that United have been happy with Mejbri’s pre-season training and matches and see him as a bright prospect for the future.

The club hope he will benefit from the experience of playing regular football.
